Geriatrics
|
With life expectancy on the increase and with the arrival of large numbers of elderly immigrants in Israel, the medical needs of the elderly continue to grow. Herzog's Geriatric Division has developed rapidly over the years in response to these needs.
The Department of Acute Geriatric Internal Medicine cares for serious situations that bring the elderly to the Hospital. These include influenza, pneumonia, heart attacks, urinary tract infections and other complications. (The unit for Long Term Respiratory Care is currently part of this department.)
Then, patients who are capable of independent functioning are frequently transferred to the Department of Physical Rehabilitation, as are patients from many other hospitals and departments. In cases where patients are in need of extended medical care, they are cared for in the Long-Term Nursing Department or in the Department of Complex Nursing. Within the latter are the unit of enteral feeding and a 24-bed Pressure Sore Unit which admits patients from all over Israel.
