Herzog Center for Integrative Medicine

Healing the Whole Person

Mission

The mission of the Herzog Center for Integrative Medicine is to search for the most effective treatments for patients by combining both conventional and evidence-based complimentary approaches that address all aspects of health and wellness - biological, psychological, social, occupational and spiritual.
We are working to transform health care by setting new standards in professional healthcare, educating medical students, health professionals and the public about these practices; and creating new models of clinical care.
The Clinical Practice at the Herzog Center for Integrative Medicine offers a variety of individual treatments. The physicians and therapist work together in a patient-centered approach. Both are knowledgeable in both conventional and complementary therapies and can provide a professionally guided approach to your health care. Our physicians work in conjunction with the clients' primary care providers in order to create a truly integrated plan.
What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine is a healing-oriented medicine that seeks to incorporate treatment options from conventional and complementary approaches, taking into account not only physical symptoms, but also psychological, social and spiritual aspects of health and illness.
An integrative medical approach sees and treats the client as a whole person.

The Integrative Medicine approach at the Herzog Center for Integrative Medicine is based on the following principles:

• Collaborative care
Our diverse practitioners work as a team, integrating multiple therapies when appropriate, to provide the best possible care.
• Relationship-centered care
Our practitioners listen carefully to clients' concerns and develop a partnership with you. We believe this therapeutic alliance is essential to your healing.
• Respect for the human capacity for healing
We believe there is an innate drive toward health in every person. Our practitioners support this process.
• Self-care
We emphasize a self-care model in which patients are asked to participate actively in their treatment.

Goals

The goal of the Integrative Health Center is to offer integrative, multidisciplinary medical treatment and improvement in the health and quality of life of its clientele. Individual and group services are offered by our experienced team of health professionals who work together to address personal needs.
The center attends to the clients' medical and paramedical needs under one roof – "one stop shopping" by comprehensively addressing the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of health and wellness.
Each client has a case manager who is his/her point of contact when required (high accessibility). This service responds to the great need to create a ‘therapeutic home’ for clients, caregivers and families – ‘comprehensive client and family/caregiver management’- with

More on Integrative Medicine

 Neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts complementary medicine uncritically
 Recognition that good medicine should be based in good science, inquiry driven & open to new paradigms
 Use of natural, less invasive interventions whenever possible
 The broader concepts of promotion of health & the prevention of illness as well as the treatment of disease
 Practitioners as models of health & healing, committed to the process of self-exploration & self-development
An integrative medical approach sees the client as a whole person, including his physical, social and psychological well-being, taking into account that his well-being influences his functional state. This approach is based on World Health Organization (WHO) health parameters which state that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of illness or infirmity. The health parameters stress the need to improve well-being and prevent illness, not just to concentrate on treating the illness when it breaks out.
In addition to the conventional treatment of illness, importance is given to promoting good health and preventing sickness.
The background for the increased awareness in integrative medicine is predicated on immense technological and scientific developments which have led to improvements in psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). This scientific field has brought deep scientific understanding of the affect of the mind and the emotional state on bodily systems and health.
This approach acknowledges and applies medical research information on the effect of the inter-reaction between the body and the mind (mind-body medicine).

The treatment is multidisciplinary and comprises:

1. Conventional, professional diagnosis and treatment
2. Comprehensive evaluation of the person as a whole – personal, family and social background, stress factors, strength factors, ways of coping etc.
3. Evaluation and balancing of medication
4. Possibility of taking part in novel experimental treatments
5. Physiotherapy treatment and other physical exercise
6. Stress-reducing treatment
7. Advice on nutrition/diet
8. Supplementary treatment
9. Various cognitive exercises
10. Guidance and training in medicine, prevention and well-being for the care-recipient and the families
11. Support group for the care-recipient and the family
12. Center for the Health of the Mind – prevention, early diagnosis and integrative treatment for lapses of memory, attention and concentration, and motor and sensory disturbances
13. Rehabilitation: functional, motor and cognitive

Brain Health Center

Causes and risk factors for cognitive impairments are multifactorial. Assessment and treatment must be multifactorial and multidisciplinary accordingly.
The Brain Health Center is a center within the Herzog Center for Integrative Medicine. Its role is to serve people with neurological problems such as Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, cognitive disorders, Parkinson's disease, strokes, ALS, epilepsy, headaches, multiple sclerosis, etc., within the same professional, integrative, health-oriented and multidisciplinary approach described above. Our team includes experts in neurological treatments ready to provide these unique medical needs.
The Brain Health Center offers neurological assessment of cognitive abilities and treatment of cognitive impairments. This includes a multidisciplinary approach to cognitive enhancement including treatment of attention, concentration and memory through the Memory Enhancement Program:
 Cognitive and behavioral assessment and diagnosis for screened clients with cognitive deficits
 Detection of systemic disorders: Electrolytes, endocrine, cardiac, nutritional, infections, inflammatory
 Mood and behavioral disorders detection
 Client and caregiver well-being/distress assessment
 Memory enhancement course
 Special emphasis on reducing conversion rates of minimal cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer’s disease
The Brain Health Center offers treatment of adult attention deficit disorder (ADD). A patient-centered therapeutic plan is tailored for the specific client in accordance to his individual condition and needs.
Prevention is a cost-effective approach reducing morbidity and mortality. The Brain Health Center provides a program for screening large population for cognitive impairments thus allowing early detection, prevention and prompt treatment. Part of the screening program for cognitive impairments will be computer-based.
