Herzog Medical Center is one of the major geriatric hospitals in Israel and the only one in the greater Jerusalem area. As such it is the referral center for many patients with multi-organ failure. Over the last few years, the hospital has built up a large dialysis service in response to the needs of the local population, most recently completing construction and opening a new sheltered dialysis center with more than 30 beds, to enable patients to receive care in light of the heightened security threat of falling rockets and attack as a result of the current War. In the event of full-scale attack, Herzog’s Sheltered Community Dialysis Clinic can treat up to a total of more than 200 dialysis patients at once.
Most of the patients that attend the Dialysis at Herzog are ambulatory patients, but some also require full time nursing care. These patients are hospitalized in Herzog’s general nursing wards and are moved for dialysis treatment each time. As the unit is an integral part of the Internal Medicine department, it has twenty-four-hour medical coverage, a full nursing complement and full access to Hospital laboratory services.
