Infant and Child Chronic Respiratory Care

Herzog Medical Center maintains the largest Infant and Children’s Chronic Respiratory Care Department in Israel. Children represent a unique challenge in this very specialized field. Children ranging in age from 3 months to adolescence require continued support of a respirator 24/7 to breathe. Congenital defects, genetic diseases or trauma caused by accidents or malice (such as falls, drowning, car accidents, terror attacks etc.) cause such severe injuries that the child requires the continued support of a respirator to breathe.

Advances in medication and respiratory care technology including special physiotherapy for breathing has enabled the staff to wean some of the children off of the respirator. Doctors and specialized staff work tirelessly to enhance children’s lives and provide them with satisfactory stimulating activities and the best quality of life possible.

Herzog Medical Center with its recently constructed six story Samson Medical Pavilion, has an entire department of 30 beds dedicated exclusively to children’s chronic respiratory care. The Department is staffed by specially trained doctors, nurses and paramedical staff (such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and teachers). The proactive and dedicated care these children receive has set the standard for such care in Israel and internationally.
